Material formerly held in the Western Manuscripts Department's Autograph Letters Sequence: very miscellaneous notes (chiefly manuscript; no.9 is printed) on mesmerism, magnetism and spiritualism, particularly in respect of "magnetised water", including correspondence, accounts of cases, and documentation relating to the Société du Magnétisme, Paris, either made by Robillard, collected by him or sent to him. Individuals represented or mentioned include Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815) (no.8: letter concerning the erection of a bust of him) and Baron Dupotet (Jean Du Potet de Sennevoy, 1796-1881) (no.10); no.44 recounts an amputation under hypnosis, no.45 a cure carried out in 1785, using "magnetised water", by the Comte de Lutzelbourg (see Extrait du journal d'une cure magnétique edited by the Comte de Lutzelbourg [Rastadt: J.W. Dorner, 1787]), and no.48 mentions the occult text the Clavicule of Solomon, examples of which are held elsewhere in the Western Manuscripts collection (see MSS. 4655-4670).
