    Pettigrew versus Marey. PHE great interest taken in aerial locomotion, and the ! ' increasing belief in the feasibility of a flying machine, invest works on natural and artificial flight with a rtain significance and importance which cannot be over li mated in the present day, charadlerised as it is by . uisual progress and invention. The works to which we wish more especially to direft ttention, and which have attradled an unusual share of Dtice, are those of Dr. J. Bell Pettigrew, of Edinburgh, lid Professor E. J. Marey, of Paris. 'The names of Dr. Pettigrew and Professor Marey are Esll known in the scientific world, and require only to be tentioned. Both gentlemen are physiologists of a high (der, both have experimented largely on the subjedl under ansideration, and both, as a consequence, are entitled to :: heard. The objedl of the present article is to show that these wants, notwithstanding certain apparent differences (and iDtwithstanding much that has been written to the con- sary), essentially agree. The fundamental features of Lght, according to both, are the same. If there be differ- :ices, they refer, for the most part, to time and the mode of ;eatment adopted, Dr. Pettigrew having published his views Dme two years before Professor Marey. Dr. Pettigrew obtained his results by transfixing the odomen of insedls with a fine needle, and watching Ithe ings vibrate against a dark background, by causing dragon- ties, butterflies, blowflies, wasps, bees, beetles, &c., to fly I a large bell jar, one side of which was turned to the light, tae other side being rendered opaque by dark pigment; by
