    SMOKE OBSERVATIONS. Fifty-four abiservations, of ooe hour’s duratioiii! each; weite taken of factory chimneys. In eleven inisitances the amount of black simoke emitted during ithe hour exceeded tlhe limit of six minutes allowed by the Council. In each case notices of abatement were served, and in five cases subsequent observations proved of a moire favourable character. Legal proceedings were taken in one case’ for non-abate¬ ment of the nuisianoe, and an order of the Court was obtained for the abatement of the nuisiance, with costs, against the defendants. In this case, after the adoption of a mechanical contrivance for assisting the cons-umption of smoke, considerable improve-* menit resulted. CANAL BOATS. The number of canal boats inspected during the year was twenty-eight. The following four contraventdonis of the Canal Boiats Acts or Regulations were met with One boat with leakage of water' into both cabins. One boat overcrowded. Two boats with no^ certifi’cate on board. In each case the infringemenSts were brought tO' the notice of the owners of the boats. In three cases the: inifringemienitiS have been remedied. The other case is having attention. No legal proceedings have been found neicessa:ry in respect of th'P' infringements met with. With the exception of the cases mentioned, the geineral condition of the boats was satisfactory. FACTORIES AND WORKSHOPS. During the ydar the sanitary accommio|dation at twenty factories was inspected ; and seventy-seven inispectionis of work¬ shops (including bakehouses) were made.
