    as this tends to prevent varicose veins, sore feet and backaches. The expectant mother requires plenty of sound unbroken sleep. Her room should be well ventilated, and free from draughts. The best means for ensuring a current of air across the room is to keep the window of a room with a fireplace wide open. If there is no chimney, open windows and doors will do. Diet Diet during pregnancy requires special consideration, because the growing baby is dependent upon its mother to supply the right materials out of which its body is built. These materials are made available chiefly through the mother’s diet which should be good, simple, digestible, and nutritious, there being no need for any special food preparations, or for taking appreciably more than would be taken at other times. The common counsel to “eat for two” is absurd, because the weight of the mother and her unborn babe does not exceed considerably her ordinary weight. Women bring on indigestion by taking excess of food, especially of soft, sloppy foods. There are certain food stuffs, however, which are absolutely necessary for the promotion and maintenance of healthy life; these foods are called “protective foods” because they protect the body from dietary deficiencies and deficiency diseases. They are essential not only for the optimum health of the mother but also to the proper development of the unborn baby. Every expectant mother should have a diet which includes the following protective foods:— Milk One to one and a half pints daily (including that used in cooking). Eggs One, three times weekly. Fish Once or twice weekly. Meat Never more than once daily. Cheese Occasionally.
