In fact there is a network of rail- ways connecting the lakes with each other, and with Milan and the south. Arona, 738 ft., is the railway terminus at the south end of the lake. To Milan, hours. Varese is an important intermediate station in spring for invalids coming from the south and from the Riviera and on their way to Switzerland ; in the autumn again it is a valuable intermediate station. There is a special station (Casbeno) on the line from Milan (2 hours), and Como to Laveno hour), for the Excelsior Hotel. The hotel is at an altitude of 1,200 ft. above the sea-level; it is situated in beautifully shaded grounds and is well appointed in every way (English physician in spring and autumn). In this connection it may be remarked that the tramway service is so complete in Turin as to have reduced the carriage traffic in a remark- able degree, which fact doubtless contributes to the sani- tary excellence of the city.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b28139355_0294.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
