Description
Promotional cardboard jigsaw (probably from the early 1930s) issued by John Knight Ltd. advertising their popular Family Health Soap. It shows a smiling chimney sweep in a flat cap with a brush over his shoulder holding a bar of the soap in his right hand, the implication being that the soap is good enough to be able to clean those in even the dirtiest of occupations. The background suggests blue sky and red-brown buildings. The soap packaging is shown in the foreground. The jigsaw is something that would probably have been sent in return for several coupons cut from the boxes that the soap was sold in. John Knight Ltd. was established in 1810 and were based at Silvertown, Victoria Docks, Wapping, London. Primrose Soap and Knight’s Castile soap being another two of their famous brands. They were eventually taken over by Lever Brothers as part of the firm's determined move to dominate the British soap and detergents market.
