    therefore, 1,108, making a birth rate of 11.47 on the Registrar-General’s estimate of the population. The following table shows the birth rates for the past ten years, calculated on the Registrar- General’s estimate of the population. Of these noti- fications 700 were made by doctors, 480 by midwives and 4 by other persons. (b) Infantile Mortality. Sixty-nine infants died in Bournemouth during their first year of life. Of these deaths 14 were transferred to other districts. Six infant deaths occurring in other areas were transferred to Bournemouth, the number of infant deaths referred by the Registrar-General to Bourne- mouth being therefore 61, making an Infantile Mortality of 55.05. Of the 61 infant deaths, 18 were certified as due to premature birth and 5 to congential malformations.
