    its broadside by the wind; and consequently, that every approach towards this equality of resistance must both diminish steadiness, and increase the strain on the spindle. 2. As to Suspension: a spindle of hard iron, tapering to a point not finer than that of a crayon, should enter into a Tube stopped by a harder substance. A flint, having a smooth concave face on one side, will answer for this, and it may be fixed in a socket as much larger than the tube itself as is necessary, and so joined to the tube. The Spindle is likewise to pass through guides in¬ serted in the tube, and to be sufficiently long, to allow for sub¬ sidence by wear at top. On it, the moving part should rest in equilibrium. The Counterpoise is best made by a loaded ball, carried out to the proper distance (which may be found by trial before fixing it) on a slender, single or double branch of iron.
