![On the other hand Friedreich* as late as 187: his valuable monograph, takes up the opposite v: but then it must be noted that the cases he qv. in illustration of his views, in which he was ab make the autopsy, were none of them o( the gi now under consideration, but belong to types s shown to be myopathies, or else to the grou] cases which form the subject of the thesis. Now the above rapid sketch of what we may the myelopathic thenar type of progressive muse atrophy, is one of the most common, and as atro is its most prominent symptom, a very large nun: of cases have been, as it were, labelled with name, and assigned to this group. Hence it is 1 we find in quite late writers, progressive musci atrophy described as commencing at any age f] three years upwards, often having no fibri tremors, and often distinctly hereditary. As regards heredity, it must be noted 1 Bamberger,! FriedreichJ and Leyden§ all hint the tendency of the hereditary form to appear in lower extremities.
