![Lour., FI. cochin., 127 : — Anchusa officinalis, radice longa, rubra. Sinice tsu tsao.—Tatar., Cat., 61:—Tsz‘ ts‘ao. Rad. Anchusa’.—Gauger [48] describes and figures the root. Henry, Chin, pi., 508 :—In Hu pei tsz‘ ts‘ao is Lithospermum erjjthrorhizon.—hid. FI. sin., II, 154. Cast. Med., p. 60 (40):—Tsz1 tslao exported 1885 from I chang to other Chinese ports 73 piculs,10—p. 8 (65) from New chwang 27 piculs,—p. 354 (203) from Canton 2 piculs.— Hank. Med., 48 :—Exported from Han kow. Regarding L. erythrorhizon in Japan see Hot. sin., II, 142. 24.—Q ^ pcii tlou weng. P., XIR, 38. T., CLXXII. Pen king:—Pai tlou weng (the gray head), Igf ^ \ ye chang jen (wild old man), 3* ^ hit xoang shi che (barbarian prince’s envoy). Root and flowers used in medicine. Taste of the root bitter. Nature warm. Non- poisonous. Pie la:—The pai t‘ou weng, also called ^ fiij nai ho tslao, grows in Kao slian [in Kiang su, App. 118], in mountain valleys and in waste places. It is dug up in the 4th month. T‘ao TIung-king :—It is a common plant. Near the root it is covered with a soft down and thus resembles the gray head of an old man, whence the above names. Su Kung [7th cent.]:—Its leaves resemble those of the shao yo [Panda. See 52], but are larger. It produces one stem, at the top of which is a purple flower resembling that of the nut kin [Hibiscus syriacus. See M'h ya, 6], The 10 The export from I chang of 73 piculs is tzu 2>‘b which seems to he a different substance from tzu tslau. The point at any rate requires elucidation.—A.
