![SURVEY OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRIC UNITS Questionnaire to Consultant Psychiatrists in Child and Adolescent Units (England). Analysis of 57 replies received to 58 questionnaires issued. One consultant was unable to answer questions 3-7 as he was new to his unit and no records had been kept by his predecessor. 1. HOW MANY BEDS ARE AVAILABLE IN YOUR UNIT FOR (a) PRE-ADOLESCENT CHILDREN (b) ADOLESCENTS OF SCHOOL AGE (c) OLDER ADOLESCENTS ABOVE SCHOOL AGE? 19 units had beds for more than one of the classes and did not specify how these were allocated between the classes. This was usually because the number of beds available to each class could be varied to allow for fluctuation in pressures between the various types of cases. Figures are included for all 58 units. Figures for beds: Class a 458 29 units Class b 257 15 units Class c 5 2 units Classes a and b mixed 107 6 units Classes b and c mixed 19] 11 units Classes a,b andc mixed 10 2 units os TOTAL 1,088 beds eee 2. HOW MANY BEDS IN THESE CATEGORIES ARE ORDINARILY IN USE? 31 of the 57 units who replied to this question (54%) reported 100% bed occupancy. The overall average rate was 88 % (956 beds). Only 3 units reported a rate below 70%, one of which was a new unit restricting admissions until the staff were fully trained, another had staffing difficulties. 3. HOW MANY PERSONS IN EACH CATEGORY ARE CURRENTLY ON THE WAITING LIST? Of the 56 units who replied to this 16 did not have a waiting list. Of these 5 said this was a matter of policy and 8 did not need a waiting list at present. Of the remaining 40 units, 8 grouped more than one of our classes together; the following figures emerge: Class a 131 Class b 81 Class c 9 Class a and b mixed te | Class b and c mixed 12 Class a, b and c mixed 30 —_—_——— TOTAL 340 on waiting list](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b32220261_0001_0444.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
