![( 1901] LAST DAYS 501 father was just conscious; then in a few moments all was over, and he had passed away without a pang. On the 19th he was carried to his last resting-place by his wife’s side in Holywell Cemetery, through streets lined by a hushed and sorrowing crowd. ‘ There was not a child in Oxford but knew him,’ said one of the spectators. It was a beautiful autumn day, and the Oxford of which he was so proud had never looked fairer. One of Acland’s favourite readings had been the Story of the Robins in Mrs. Gatty’s Parables from Nature; and as the bier was borne to the graveside a little robin sang brightly its song of hope.
