Privy Council Letter, to Lord Treasurer Burghley, praying that the sum of £375 may be sent for the maintenance of troops at Ostend, signed by Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord High Chancellor; Henry Carey, Lord IIunsdon ; Lord Buckhurst, the poet; Tho. IIeneage ; Sir John Fortescue, Chancellor of the Exchequer ; Sir Francis Walsingham, Secretary of State, &c. dated Whitehall, June 5, 1589. Also Autograph Order of Lord Burghley at the foot. An interesting assemblage of signatures, in fine preservation ; with print, containing portraits 197 Elgin (Lord) antiquary. A.L.s. 1 page 4to. May 14, 1815, addressed to Mr. Henning, who produced the beautiful casts from the antique Sculptures brought to this country by Lord Elgin ; also a pencil sketch on the back by Mr. Henning 198 Elstob (Elizabeth) translator of the * Anglo-Saxon Homily, on the Birth-day of St. Gregory b. 1683, d. 1756 A.L.s. 1 page 4to. Bush Lane, Oct. 10, 1709. A most beautiful specimen of a very rare Autograph. She mentions the completion of one of her books, and refers to her other literary engagements, a translation of the Psalms, &c. “ Having nothing else to do, 1 have some thoughts of publishing a set of Saxon Homilies, if I can get encouragement; which I believe will be very useful, the doctrine for the most part being very orthodox, and where any errours have crept in, it may not be amiss to give some account of them.” She has not at present any original letters of famous men and women, but will collect what she can for her correspondent. Etc. 199 Emerson (William) mathematician b. 1701, d. 1782 A.L.s. 2 pages 4to. apparently to his publisher, Hurworth, Oct. 2, 1769. Col. Pasley, Sir John Rennie, Sir R. Seppings, Tho. Telford in all, nine A.L.s. 201 Erskine (Thomas Scott, Lord) celebrated lawyer and orator b. 1750, d. 1823 A.L.s. 11 page 4to. to Col. Stanhope. Buchan Hill, Sept. 21, 1823. With two portraits “ I did not know till yesterday of your truly noble and public-spirited intention of representing us in Greece .... having received several kind and friendly communications from the different committees on the Continent, who have signalized themselves in this glorious cause of religion, humanity, and freedom.
