Doctors differ a great deal as to the merits of this well- known substance, and always have done so. For instance, that famous old physician, Abernethy, had a great opinion of it as @& BLOOD PURIFIER, while the present-day Sir Lauder Brunton has so poor an opinion of it that he sarcastically says, in his book on drugs, that the dose of it is from a wineglassful to a bucketful. When doctors thus differ, the best thing one can do is to go by one’s own experience—if one has had any. And the present writer has had experience of the following pre- paration of Sarsaparilla, and most highly recommends it as a strengthening and a purifying Mixture :— Take of Sarsaparilla Root, sliced and bruised, 6 ozs.; Liquorice Root, sliced, 1 oz.; Limewater, 4 pints. Let them digest together in a covered vessel for 24 hours, dur- ing which time they should be frequently stirred and shaken. After being strained, it is fit for use. Doss: 24 pint twice a day. The above prescription should be tried by those whose blood has been poisoned in any way. It is much simpler and even more effective than what is known as the “ compound decoc- tion” of the drug. For sypHInis it is most excellent. SOOTHING MIXTURE. Sometimes the pain and inflammation set up by Bors, Uucers, and Anscussus is so intense that a Soothing Mixture for internal use is advisable.
