![hear with satisfaction that Her Majesty the Queen has been pleased to decorate Dr. Orange with the Civi] Companionship of the Order of the Bath in recognition of his eminent services.’* The re-arrangement in the medical staff that resulted in conse¬ quence of Dr. Orange’s retirement consisted of the successive promotions of myself to the office of Superintendent from the 1st of June, of Dr. Isaac to be Deputy-Superintendent, and of Dr. Paterson to be Senior Assistant Medical Officer. Dr. John Baker, who wTas selected from the list of candidates for the post of Junior Assistant Medical Officer, joined on the 1st of September. He brought with him an excellent record of service at the Royal Asylum, Dundee, where he had been Assistant Medical Officer for three years. The recommendations made by the Council of Supervision with the view of filling up these vacancies as they occurred met with the approval of the Secretary of State in each case. The average cost per patient for the year ending March 31st, 1887, was 45/. 145. 2d. The Appendix to this Report gives an ample tabular statement as to the general and financial matters of interest connected with the past and present working of the asylum. I have to express my indebtedness, to my medical colleagues for their help in preparing the medical tables; to Mr. Phelps as regards the financial tables ; and to Mr. Hazle as regards the general statistics. I have to record my appreciative sense of the valuable support that I have bad from all the officers and staff. In conclusion, I would ask the Council to let me offer them my best acknowledgments for their unvarying personal kindness and consideration at all times during the past 11 years, and for the cordial assistance which they have always given to me in carrying on my work.
