M. Chakra- varti’s “ Language and Literature of Orissa.” ? Upendra Bhanja, Viravara, was of the royal family of Gumsar in the District of Ganjam. His father, Nilakantha Bhaiija, after only two years rule (1701 to 1703) was deposed, and settled with his family at Malisihi in the country of Nava- durga. Upendra was a young man at the time. The exact year of his birth is unknown, but was probably about.1685 A.D. His Rasa-lekha is dated the 27th aka of Raja Divyasimha.* He was uneducated during the first part of his life, but subsequently studied Sanskrit, and his poetical abilities were stimulated by help received from Ramataraka Mantra. He lived for some time at Banapur, and married the daughter of the ruler of that place. The title of Viravara was conferred on him by the ~ Raja of Navadurga. Upendra died at about 40 years of age. Upendra Bhaija was a voluminous author, most of his works being fictional poems. ‘Tarini- charana has given a list of 42 of his works, of which 20 have been published, and 22 are un- published.
