    feiderable liesitation, I have resolved to publish the results of my present experience, imperfect as it is, and trust that some future writer may- be able to do more justice to the subject than is possible for myself. Towards the close of the year 1849, I .left England for the purpose of visiting all the great Contiaental hospitals, and of ascertaiaing, not in a cursory manner, but as fully and completely as possible, the methods of treatment pursued in them, and of carefuUy observing and noting their agreement or disagreement with our own. In the course of this inquiry, I arrived in Berlin in January, 1850, and soon attached myself principally to the Charite Hospital there. The great reputation which Professor Schonleiri justly enjoys, attracted me in the first place strongly to the Charite, and here I had the good fortune very soon to become intimatelyacquainted with Dr. Traube, Professor Schonlein's assistant. With this gentleman, I was enabled fully to satisfy my thirst for information respecting the state of German medical science and practice.
