I. o^pvs t]\lov is a synonym of the a-x^olvos i\eia in Diosc. iv. 52. 1. 4. rjXioynvov: cf. e^ioyavov as synonym of (^ov<^ in Peyr. Lex. 422 along with kvlkos (carthamus tinctorius, Diosc. iv. 187), drpaKTvXis (ib. iii. 97), &c.; so apparently a sort of thistle. 1. 5. aeK-qvoyovov: the name given by irpo^r^Tai to the naiovla (the modern paeonia) according to the synonyms in Diosc, iii. 147. The plant-names ascribed to the Trpo^^rat are naturally connected with deities, heavenly bodies and the like. Sprengel (Praefat., p. xvi) identifies the Trpo<prjTtn with those of Egypt, but this is perhaps too precise. 1. 9, The grammatical construction seems confused ; one would expect euj*.q or eTeuje^q, St., §§ 426, 427. The writer has given the form of the relative ctcwtcM) hut has inserted ^r, which seems to be an anomaly. 1. 10.
