The red dye made from the leaves is now the commonest cosmetic in the East, but was perhaps little known anciently. The oil frequently occurs in prescriptions in Alex. Trall. I. 7. sym ft gyz-. lit. ‘hand-plant,’ with gloss ntiT*.KT*.\oc, which no doubt stands for i^tvTibaKTvXo^, Diosc. iv. 42 = Tt-evTacjivWov (potentilla).
