![aid to thè professor iu imparting knowledge, and may be found in special Works. I bave substituted for tliis cumbersome material simple and illu- minating sketches of industriai apparatus and processes whicli I bave collected froin tbe best orks on cbemical technology (Muspratt, Dammer, Bertscb, Lunge, &c.) froin patents or directly from practice in Avorks Avbich baA^e been visited by me in Italy and otber countries. Tbiis tbe student aaìII become accustomed to comprebend tbose means by AA'bicb ]3rocesses pass from tbe experiments of tbe scbool and from more abstract scientific considerations to tbe more important industriai applica- tions. Practical disappointment and disastrous fallure, due to too dogmatic and simj)le conceptions acquired during tbe teaching of thè schools, Avill be spared to maii}^ in tbe future. They aaùII learn hoAV one passes from thè retort and tbe beaker to tbe more AA^onderful devices of modern technology, and boAA^ in tbe course of cbemical processes in practice one must not only take tbe inaili reactions Avhicb are ordinarily found in thè books into account, but also tbe secondary reactions, special conditions of temperature, pressure and time, and thè proportions of tbe reacting substances. These are all conditions AAliich may decide thè success or fallure of an entire industry. I am far from believing tbat tbis hook may be considered as a treatise on cbemical technology, but it is my conviction tbat industriai cbemistry must start from tbe foundations of generai cbemical culture embodied in tbis treatise, in order to enter into all thè tecbnical and economie conditions of manufacture of tbe more important compounds and in order to place thè 3^oung ebemist in a position to assume tbe direction of and collaboration in Olir Chemical industry Avith more success and utility.
