About this work

Description

Perhaps supposed to be set in the Roman Campagna or the Alban hills. In the right foreground, three cattle rest on the bank of a river or pool near a larger body of water (lake or sea). Centre, a boy playing with a dog, two women with a swaddled child, a man sleeping, and a man resting with two donkeys. Far left, an ancient monastery on a hilltop. The boy, the women and the two men are presumably "travellers" as stated by Boydell in the lettering. But then whose are the cattle?
