In 1938 there were 4,944 births, in 1937 there woro 4,861 births, 19.36 5,088 births. Tho birth rate for 1940 (16.5.per 1,000 porsons living) is .6 higher m that for 1939 (15.9). The birth rate for England and Walos for tho year 1940 was 14.6. For the Urban districts of tho County the birth rato was 17.08 per D00 for 1940, and for tho Rural Districts •, 13.3 compared with 16.4 and .2 respectively in 1939 and 16.5 and 13.1 in 1938. Tho number of births of illegitimate children was 168 which givos rato of 32.07 per 1,000 of tho total births, and .53 per 1,000 population, st year tho numbor was 159 equal to 32.8 por 1,000 births and .52 por 000 of population.
