![important historical record. For the author shared the sufferings of the Jews of the Iberian peninsula in 1391, and this gives pathetic point to his counsel: “ Flee without hesitation when exile is the only means of securing religious freedom; have no regard to your worldly career or your property, but go at once.” Some of the most admired Ethical works of the sixteenth and later centuries had, like the earlier “ Book of the Pious,” a distinctly mystical tinge. They chiefly emanated from German writers, who effected a syncretism between ritual piety and deep, mystical spirituality. One striking instance is Hirsch Kaidenower’s “ The Just Measure ” (Kab ha-yashar, 1705)—“ a combination of ethics and asceticism,” which has often been printed in Judseo- German. Such books made a deep impression, and belonged to the most popular reading matter of the masses. BIBLIOGRAPHY. Ethical Literature. Steinschneider, Jewish Literature, pp. 100, 232. B. H.
