Perhaps, while objecting to the occasional misapplication of your figures, I may have criticized too freely statistics published wider your sanction. Iam aware of the peril of my undertaking, and of its imperfections ; nevertheless, I look to you as my earliest guide in the study of Vital Statistics, and I am unwilling to let this collection of my statistical papers go before the public without acknowledging your claims as one of my oldest allies in the warfare of sanitary science against indifference, ignorance, and prejudice.
