    These figures show that of the increase of 2836 which has taken Statistics place in the number of patients in public and parochial asylums, of ian: in the Junatic wards of poorhouses, and in the lunatic department Number of the central prison, 407 arise from the decrease in private and Distri- asylums, and 287 from the decrease in private dwellings; leaving vette ae an increase of 2142 representing either a growth of lunacy, or simply an increased number of lunatics placed in establishments. Table III. shows the number of private and pauper lunatics, of whom we had official cognizance, at Ist January 1858, and at Ist January of each of the ten years 1865-1874 ; and the numbers of each category accommodated in establishments and private dwellings, distinguishing between males and females :— TABLE III. On the other hand, there is a decrease of 343 in the number of pauper lunatics, and an increase of 56 in the number of private lunatics in ordinary dwellings. The results of 1873 alone give an increase of 104 pauper and 31 private patients in establishments, Table IV. gives the ratio of lunatics to the general population at Ist January 1858, and at Ist January of each of the ten years 1865- 1874 :—
