Examination, however, proves that so far from being of the sixteenth it is certainly of the nineteenth cen¬ tury. It is fresh looking, and the arrises are sharp. The resident surveyor, Mr Chart, to whom these suspicions were communicated, says that about forty years ago there flourished at Hampton Court a strenuous master plumber who renewed with some ferocity. Doubtless the existing heads are approximately like the originals, but the top mouldings are ugly and suggest the Victorian plumber at his coarsest. There are no authentic early heads with the same mouldings. Amono-st the earliest heads are two at o Windsor Castle, which are purely in the old manner (Figs. 37 and 38). One is dated 1589 in bold fio-ures, and both were originally on the Elizabethan portion of the Castle on the north front, now part of the Royal Library. They were taken down in February 1904. re¬ paired, and photographed. The lion prances in vigorous mediaeval style, and is a very blithe piece of modelling. All the letters, ornaments, and cresting are applied. The plan of the J O O
