Description

Lt-Col. Oswald Henry Ames, of Durfold Hall, Dunsfold, Surrey. Army officer, Herts Militia, 1881, and 2nd Life Guards, 1884; retired, 1906; rejoined Aug. 1914. Justice of the Peace in Norfolk. Portrayed in uniform of the Life Guards, wearing a monocle, and standing outside the background of the lithograph, with a small chair in the background, giving the impression of great height. "He was one of the tallest men in the British Army and in 1897, then a captain, he was chosen to head Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee procession (obituary in The times, 7 November 1927)
