About this work

Description

Transmission electron micrograph of a section through a phagocytic cell (macrophage) in the vicinity of an autoimmune corneal ulcer. Around the cell the stromal lamellar architecture is disrupted and has been infiltrated by many inflammatory cells. The cell contains many lysosomes, a large lamellar body in the centre and a phagosome at the bottom of the cell containing ingested cellular debris. The cell in the bottom left of the field is a plasma cell containing mitochondria and Golgi apparatus.
