    stated by Dr. Stoffkraft, and undoubtedly held by many Christians, were at all correct, his conclusion would be inevitable. This is not the time to enter into an argument on the sub- ject, still less to justify my opinion, as I could easily do by references to all parts of Scripture. I will merely say that I cannot imagine how any one can doubt that immortality is there stated to be a boon specially conferred, and on those alone who are accounted worthy.1 I don’t know what Mr. Bemerton may think, but in my opinion this is indubitably the formal doctrine of the Church of England. In the very first Collect of the Christian year we have the petition that in the last day ... we may rise to the life immortal. In the second we pray that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life given to us in Christ. And in another which soon follows, we pray that the Church, enlightened by doctrine, may so walk that it may at length attain to the light of everlasting life.
