Does religion belong to so different an order of our faculties that we have any right to expect that we should now, even after eighteen centuries of patient examination, know all or even much about it ? Is it so much more evi- dent than the cause of gravitation, or that of the periodicity of sun-spots and of Eastern famines ? Yet these are matters on which we have the means offully judging—give us time enough. Human intellects are very limited, and we must be content to take a great deal on the evidence of our faith, as well as on that of our senses, before reason can be expected to come in to the rescue.
