    be no doubt that those upon whom we depend for the Christian religion, including, I venture to say, the Master himself, held an untenable theory in religious matters, and I fail to see how we can reconcile this with the Divine per- fection of Christ. The Rev. Ralph Bemerton.—I believe I am at one with the Doctor regarding the first position which he has assumed. Like him, I do not believe in the plenary verbal inspi- ration of the Bible, and the Church to which I belong goes no further than to assert that the Scriptures contain the word of God. I quite think, too, that the plenary and verbal inspiration of the original document, without the continued Divine superintendence of copy- ists and translators, would be a perfectly futile proceeding. We may therefore dismiss such a hypothesis from our consideration. On the other hand, a verbal inspiration, with the super- intendence of copyists and translators, would be a method of procedure very much unlike
