    whether he should partake of the fruit rather than of the leaves and bark (his senses failing to distinguish between these three things), then it is not probable that he will derive benefit from the tree. There is an instinct which underlies all our practical operations, and which is independent of our scientific attainments, which it invariably precedes. A man who has eyes will not decline to make use of light until he is conversant with the undulatory theory, nor will a man who is hungry object to an apple or a piece of bread until he is absolutely master of its chemical constitution. In like manner we may derive unspeakable practical benefits from the Bible long before we are prepared with a complete theory of in- spiration. It is so in all the arts of life;—we have first of all a rough method of using the materials provided for us, and we ultimately arrive at a knowledge of the scientific principles under-
