    tianity is within a man, even as he is a being gifted with reason.’ And again he says, ‘For Christianity proves itself, as the sun is seen by its own light. Its evidence is involved in its existence.’ Sir Kenneth MKelpie.—And that existence is itself a miracle—and a continued one. Men speak of the religious systems of Buddha and of Mohammed as persistent, and therefore possibly genuine. But their persistence is that of everything Eastern—a state of indolent re- pose, and of status quo. How different from an essentially aggressive creed like that of the Christian! What has been considered as Chris- tianity has never for more than a few centuries been exactly the same creed—all sorts of so- called Reformations have modified it, and split its adherents into sects innumerable, many of them being in fact almost infinitesimal. But it lives on for all that, and will probably have to suffer many more gigantic Reformations before it becomes anything like the ideal of Christ and His immediate followers. I hope I may call
