    visit to Strathkelpie have been very numerous, and, to me, of immense consequence. ‘ In spite of the incredulous laughter of the party at Elmsly House, I believed myself destined, as I told them, to become an old bachelor. (No doubt he did; he was quite truthful, but quite ignorant of himself) I am now happily married, and feel myself in all respects improved in consequence. (He coulddt well help that, unless he had married a fool.) I have recently reverted to my old mathe- matical and physical papers, and such of them as I have yet published have been exceedingly well received. (By whom f I should like to know. Quips, quirks, and conundrums. Call that science !) Should I desire or require it, I am now certain of a Professors chair. (Best thing he could do: give him some work that must be done, and keep his wits from going a wool-gathering.) I have even been promoted to civil distinction, in a form which enables me to have an influence on public affairs. (Fancy mathematics making a man a Privy Councillor!
