About this work

Description

Vicia faba (Broadbean). Also called Horsebean. Shows plant with lanceolate ovate green leaves with white and blue- black bean flowers. A plant species of the genus vicia, family fabaceae. The edible beans are well known but they cause favism (haemolytic anaemia) in some individuals with glucosephosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (a disease-producing enzyme deficiency subject to many variants, some of which cause a deficiency of enzyme activity in erythrocytes). The pollen, if inhaled, can also bring on an attack. Broadbean flour is very rich in proteins and vitamins and has been used either on its own or mixed with other flours.
