About this work

Description

Documentary following the process of organ donation from the death of the donor to the subsequent transplantation surgery in a series of others. The programme combines detailed footage of surgical procedures and technical accounts from medics and touching scenes with patients and their friends and families. 65-year-old Penny suffered a sudden and fatal brain haemorrhage which left her brain stem dead. In life she was very keen that her organs be used for donation - husband Cyril and daughter Emma describe why it was important for them to follow her wishes. The retrieval of Penny's organs is shown in detail and key members of staff describe the processes involved. Meanwhile at King's College Hospital, Alex is called in and prepared for a combined liver and kidney transplant. At Hammersmith Hospital, Michael is hoping to receive Penny's other kidney as he is in renal failure. Penny's heart went to a sixteen year old girl who was living on ICU and had a very poor prognosis. Overall, the programme provides a unique insight into what is usually a series of procedures shrouded in secrecy in order to protect the identity of the donor.
