![Macquarie river, at the foot of some high, heavily timbered hills ; well sheltered by ranges of mountains from the hot, dry winds in summer, and from the bleak winds in winter. The district is rich in mineral, pastoral, and agricultural resources; the vine is largely cultivated. The scenery is exceedingly pretty, and the climate is dry, warm, and equable. The summer (from November to February) is hot, but the atmosphere is always particularly dry and clear ; during the remainder of the year the climate is exceedingly pleasant and exhilarating. The mean temperature in summer is 80° F., and in winter 60° F. ; the mean annual rainfall is 23 inches, with 49 wet days. The drinking water contains a large per- centage of lime salts. Excellent fishing (bream, cat-fish, huge cod weighing up to 80lbs.) ; good shooting (hares, wal- laby, kangaroo, quail, bronze-winged pigeon, wild turkey) ; boating. Hospital; Post and Telegraph Office. Excursions : The Wellington Caves (4m.;, famed for their beauty, and interesting on account of the deposit of fossil bones found in them, especially of the extinct marsupial lion; the “ Meeting of the Waters” of the Macquarie and Bell rivers, near the town ; Mount Arthur, from which a splendid view of the river is obtained ; the beautiful drive up the valley of the Macquarie to an old chapel, a missionary out- post of early days ; the Gorge of the Curra creek. Special Indications : All Chest Diseases, especially Consumption, Chronic Bronchitis, Asthma ; General and Nervous Debility ; Rheumatism is likewise benefitted. Season : Throughout the year. The climate is equable, rarely exceeding 80° F. in the shade in summer; the nights are always cool, ranging in summer between 50° F. and (50° F., and in winter from 40° F. to G0° F.
