Vaillant was one of the artists who scraped in mezzotint before its introduction into England, he worked chiefly in Amsterdam, was a friend of Prince Rupert and entered his service to assist him in his artistic hobbies. 67 Jonah and the Whale. An enormous whale, nearly taking up the whole of the plate, is resting on the surface of the sea, and ejecting from its large wide open mouth on to some rocks to left, the figure of Jonah. Standing giving the Benediction with the right hand, the left hand holding globe surmounted by a cross, a banderole at left. Black line border. Woodcut, on a large sheet covered on the back with contemporary writing. Size 100 mm. by 63 mm. With wide margins. Circa 1450. £40 The woodcut described above is an interesting example of the work of the German school, late XVth Century. Bouchot dates it about 1450. Reproduced in the Bibliothéque National, described and dated 1450-60. 71 EARLY WOODCUT ON VELLUM.
