The movable slide and permanent arms at the end arc sharp ])ointed. The bar upon which the free slide moves is ruled in centi- metres. The other JBSthesiometers are mostly shaped like dividers, and whether tliey be Hammond's or Carrol's, they are open to the objection that the ])oints arc lial)le to be unconsciously approximated when the instrument is removed, so that the result of investigation is somewhat unreliable. Carrol's aisthesiomcter lias one advantage. The points are bifurcated, one arm ending in a bulb, while tlie other is sharp, so that analgesia as well ivs anicstiiesia nuiy be tested.
