    The question has been asked : “ What is man that Thou art mindful of him? ” In some moods the question is a most natural one; for mankind, not only in its lower grosser forms, but in its commonplace everyday shape, hardly seems worthy of much attention, or of any great sacrifice. To the eye of the cynic it may seem corrupt and altogether abominable. So indeed it has been called by inspired writers. “ There is none that doeth good, no not one.” Yet instinctively we know that this is far from being the whole truth, that men have possibilities in them which make them worth saving, and that the assembly of men that we call a nation rightly demands the sacrifice of multitudes of individuals for its sustenance and defence. The struggle of mankind leaves its mark : the race is bent and contorted like an agricultural
