    NOTE The greater part of this book was written in April 1940 for the Penguin series, and though intended chiefly for the general reader, it contains much new material which may, I hope, be useful to the serious students, now relatively numerous, of this long-neglected subject. A few pages of it are reproduced, with permission, from a lecture originally given under the Beckly Trust and published in book form by the Epworth Press. I have also quoted from a still earlier and better book of my own, The Disinherited Family, pub¬ lished by Messrs. Allen & Unwin, and to this I venture to refer readers who are philosophically minded enough to want a wider and deeper appreciation of the case than is possible in the compass of this book. I am indebted to Mr. R. M. Titmuss for his help in providing me with some of my facts and figures. My other authorities are acknowledged in the appropriate places.
