    _TO THE READER. | In the View here offered of the Past and Pre- sent State of the Island of Jamaica, the author has endeavoured to comprise every particular re- lating to it which appeared to him most worthy of attention,—avoiding as much as possible such minute and voluminous details as were incom- patible with the limits of his work, and would not have materially contributed to its interest. _. Insuch a work, a detailed history of the animal and vegetable productions of this important island, and, of course, of the West Indies generally, could not be expected; such a history (in part supplied by preceding publications) would in fact fill many volumes, and ought properly to be the subject of a distinct work, the proyince of the
