    PREFACE. PREFACE. The revision of that part of the Register comprised in this volume, and particularly the period 1850-1874, has naturally been a far easier task than was the case in the earlier part. The entries in the Album were accurately transcribed for the edition of 1886, and the corrections now made have been for the most part supplied by the bearers of the names themselves. The Album has, however, been carefully studied and the contemporary School Lists examined, with the result that a few omitted names have been added to the Roll. Similarly in the annotation, the Editor has had the benefit of a sound foundation to work upon. The Editor of the volume printed in 1886 had no time-honoured glosses to mislead him, and the majority of his notes only require the additions to them which time has brought. In order to make these additions correctly circulars, specifying the points requiring attention in their own individual cases, have been sent to upwards of two thousand Old Rugbeians. That eighty per cent, have failed to reply is taken to mean rather that they are content with the old notes, than that they are indifferent as to the correctness of their entry, or the de- scriptions given of their careers. The Editor has, nevertheless, made every effort to bring all notes up to date, even in cases where personal returns might reasonably have been expected.
