The circumstances attending each of these were fully investigated by the Visitors, who satisfied them- selves that],they were cases in which no blame could be attributed to the Officers or Attendants, and which the utmost vigilance could not have prevented. It was shown that every precaution had been taken and rendered unfortunately unavailing by the peculiar cunning, ingenuity and determination which so often accompany suicidal propensities. The general health of the inmates has been moder- ately good, but diarrhoea and dysentery still occasionally show themselves, improve- Various improvements have been carried out in the merits. • • Wards, at trifling cost, and have contributed in a material degree to the comfort and well-being of the patients. The new block of buildings for Male patients which was erected in 1866, and the opening of which was alluded to in our last Eeport, is now almost fully occupied; it is found to fulfil admirably the purposes for which it was built. New No serious epidemic has visited the Asylum ; the ospitai. fofaQ^Qft Hospital has, however, been used for the reception of cases of erysipelas and dysentery, of skin disease, one of scarlet fever, and one of cholera; the latter occurred in August, in the same Ward where the epidemic of 1849 first broke out.
