In October 1996 Petrone gave a presentation of a set of his paintings with accompanying commentary at the Cancerbackup 10th anniversary conference. The artworks explored his emotional response to his diagnosis of and treatment for Hodgkin's disease. As a result of the presentation he was invited to exhibit his artworks at several Sussex venues in 1997 under the exhibition title "The Emotional Cancer Journey".
