![pearances : the centre is more compact, harder to the fee], and has a more uniform texture than the rest of the tumour, and is nearly of the con- sistence (density) of cartilage* This middle part does not exceed the size of a silver penny, and from this, like rays, in every direction are seen Ugamentous hands of a white colour, and very nar- row, looking in the section like so many extremely iiarrow irregular lines passing to the circumference ef the tumour, which is .blended with the sub* stance of the surrounding gland. In the inter- stices, between these bands, the substance is diffe- rent, and becomes less compact towards the outer edge. Gn a more minute examination, transverse ligamefitous hands^ of a fainter appearance, form a kind of network, in the meshes of which the new-formed substance is enclosed. This structure accords with what Dr. Baillie describes to be the case in cancerous diseases of the stomach and nte- rusr He again observes, that '' in a further ad- vanced stage of the tumour, the whole of the dis- eased part has a more uniform structure; no cen- tral point can be distinguished ; the external edge is more defined, and distinct from the surrounding gland; and the ligamentous bands, in different di- rections, are very apparent, but do not follow any regular course which can be traced.
