At the same time I must confess, that a too frequent repetition of this sa- lutary ciistom may take place, vvhich is in itself hiirtfu], as it occasions a repeated compression, and also promotes too much the flow of serous matter from the orgai). The vvater used for this purpose oiight always to be clear and cold, for which reason I would always give the prefer- ence to spring or river water : for if the water is not pure, possesses any saline -quality, or is even lukevvarm, it usually has the effect of influming the eyes, of producing watery humours, antl also of weakening the eyes with respect to their power of supporting the liglit.
