![KDITOR’S PREFACP:. There were two things the editor desired to do, and yet has not done : 1. To reduce the alphabet in the number of letters, by doing away with the compound consonant sh, since it is only a combination of two other conso- nants, s and h; and the vowel r, which is only ob- scure a. But these letters have been too long in use, and appear in all Choctaw literature. 2. To rearrange the words in the order in which they appear in Dr. Wright’s “Leksikon,’’ so that all words beginning with o} should appear in connection with those beginning with a instead of following those beginning with u, as r lengthened is always a and never u; ])ut as my time has been so very fully occupied with many and varied and urgent duties, it was deemed best to correct the numerous tyi)ograph- ical errors and add here and there an ex])lanatory footnote. This work has been done with great care. Another edition of this lexicon will, doubtless, never be printed or needed. T. L. MELLh^N, Miss. Sec. for Mississippi Conference, M. K. Church, Sontli.
