    climate, temperament, conftitution, and manner of life, from eleven to twenty years of age; and ceafes when the body becomes effete, or difabled from genera- tion, which happens, according to the fame circumftances, from thirty to fifty years of age. There are however inftances of earlicr and later menftruation.. — XL. Menftruation difappears during geftation, ahd generally during fuckling ; but in the firft cafe, there fometimes ap- pears a kind of effort towards it, by a peri- odical difcharge of red blood, or of whitith mucus from the vagina, which may there- fore be called preternatural or falfe men- ftruation (CCX XXVI.); and in the latter, either the real menfes or this white dif- charge fometimes occur. XLIL The firft terms of menftruation are generally feanty, and preceded or ac- companied by pains through the loins, hy- pogattric region, and head; with laffitude, horripilation, heat, and thirft.
