Potatoes are very low, and are expensive when you come to measure the work. 5|d. worth is needed to do the work that is done by 3^d. worth of oatmeal. The quantity of cabbage : required is absolutely ridiculous. A man, to do the work, would r require to eat about a stone of cabbage, and who is sufficient for tthat] Of course it must be understood that this table merely -gives the theoretical quantities that would produce the force. It lis obviously impossible to digest a stone of cabbage, or five pounds of potatoes in addition to subsistence diet, nor would it be Ihealthy to take large amounts of unbalanced food. Oatmeal and vwheat flour have the advantage of being nearly balanced, and •with the addition of milk, it would be possible to live on either oof them for long periods of hard work.
